The Ashrei project was designed by Elaine Glassman to hang on the fifth floor of the new Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged at Baycrest Centre. The fabric hanging is 10′ x 4′. Five figures dance across the banner over an assortment of Jewish ceremonial objects and symbols on a “stained glass” fabric background. The objects were hand and machine stitched and embellished with embroidery and beads. The text in Hebrew and English which runs around the border is taken from the prayer, Ashrei: “Happy are they that dwell in Thy house; they will ever praise Thee. Happy the people whose G-d is the Eternal.” Many hands worked together for over a year until the project was completed and installed in the fall of 2001.
