Our theme this year is Healing and Repair from a Jewish perspective.
Heal: to make whole again.
As makers, we sense the healing power of our creative activities.
Not only can we practically mend worn items and produce comforting new items, we can also find the practice of making self-healing.
This year we will explore the theme of textiles and textile making as tools of Healing.
How textiles can heal in a historic and/or contemporary context, an individual and/or a community, a body and/or a soul.
MEETINGS: SAVE THE DATES
There are Jewish customs to begin the new by breaking something!
By breaking a glass at a wedding, wearing ashes at a simcha, leaving an unpainted patch of plaster in a new home we recognize that we are always incomplete, there is work to do, solace to find, healing to undertake.
We’ll be making a mini repair kit, or a journal cover or a Rosh Hashanah card to send out your wishes for good health and happiness for the New Year.
Please bring: sewing kit, fabric scraps, scissors and small tweezers.

The tying of knots for both the creation of fabric and for religious purposes has a very long history and is found as an important part of various cultures around the world.
It first appears as an important part of Judaism, in the Torah, in Bamidbar (Numbers), where we learn about wearing fringes or Tzitzit on the corners of the garment known as a Tallit.
Knots play a part in Hindu culture, Chinese and Japanese dress, and in textile work and design in areas of embroidery, sewing, embellishments, and of course the Macramé craze, which has gone in and out of popularity in 1970’s and has a come back again into fashion.
You can’t go camping without knowing how to properly tie down a tent, and any sailor will tell you that we couldn’t have had any major exploratory adventures without tying decent knots to control the sailing vessels!
There are endless artistic possibilities, so come, learn and try for yourself!

Learn to crochet, if you do not already know how, we will teach you from the very beginning.
Take time to relax, create and be environmentally conscious!
You can make your own small produce bag, large market bag or a soap saver pouch for your own home spa.
There will be printed patterns for these items.
If you have cotton yarn and a 3 or 4 mm hook bring it along. If not, we will have a supply.

Sashiko originated as a way to mend and reinforce garments that evolved into a decorative expression of pattern.
Come and learn about this traditional and beautiful style of functional embroidery from Japan and try your hand at this ancient technique on a sample piece with our instructor Stacey Sproule.
