Toronto’s POMEGRANATE GUILD of JUDAIC TEXTILES is welcoming
CATHY PERLMUTTER, all the way from Los Angeles, to speak at our Opening Meeting.
Cathy is the artist/author of Gefiltequilt.blogspot.com and JUDAIQUILT.COM, has an amazing sense of humour, and is delighted to present her amusing and informative presentation. Her Judaic and secular quilts, masks, wall hangings, and sense of humour is a treat.
Cathy is also a past president of the American Pomegranate Guild and author of several books as well as the owner of an ETSY shop. Her books include The Uncommon Yarmulka, Hexagon Star Quilts, and Stitch-a-Hedron. You can learn more about her by checking out her blog at Gefiltequilt.blogspot.com and her website Judaiquilt.com.

Wednesday, October 21, 2020 (3rd Week) Virtual 7:30pm With Laya Crust
Our speaker for this meeting is our member Laya Crust.
Laya is an internationally recognized artist creating art in a variety of media. Foremost a painter, Laya creates hand-made artist books, ceremonial objects, presentation pieces for international organizations, and architectural installations.
Laya’s projects include a kosher megillah she scribed and illustrated, the 30,000 glass tile mosaic she crafted, ketubahs and a limited edition Creation Series. Her work is in private collections throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.
Laya will be speaking about the Tallit.
The tallit- or tallis- is a prayer shawl with special fringes. It used to be worn only by men with a traditional look to it. Now it has come into its own as synagogue- wear for men and women of all ages.
Laya is going to look at the biblical sources describing the tallit, historical beginnings, and the modern fashion of tallises.

Michael Hawke is the President of the Emerson Group, which specializes in digital fabric printing.
You design it- they’ll print it onto the fabric of your choice!

“Button, Button… Who has the Button?”
We all have buttons.. jars of them, removed from old shirts, jackets, coats, lost buttons found after the garment is long gone, some very old, some overbought, or just used to teach children how to count and sort!
Please join us online Wednesday, December 16th, at 7:30pm for a ZOOM adventure into “Buttonland” or “Things you never knew about the Humble Button” .
Chaya Erez and Gwen Orriell will pilot us through some of the fascinating history of buttons.
If you have any interesting, unusual, or special buttons, bring them to the computer camera to share after their talk.
You might learn something new about your special button.
The Challenge for this year includes the use of at least one button.
Maybe this will help you decide which will be that lucky button that will be a statement part of your next masterpiece!

There is a hands on component to this program and you will need:
*Paper- better quality if you have, otherwise use printer paper
* Pen – black ink
* Pencil – 2B or 3B, soft lead, you can make do with HB
* Eraser
* Ruler
* Blending stump or Q-tip
* A hard surface to work on

ROBERT DAVIDOVITZ
Robert Davidovitz, an Israeli born Toronto-based artist will speak about the journey of his practice, and his interest in the relationship between painting and textile art through a process he calls “woven paint” and how these two different media can form endless possibilities.
Robert has been the recipient of several grants and his work has been exhibited in various galleries, most recently at the FENTSTER Gallery.

Every quilt has a story – when, why, for whom, colour and design choices, techniques selected and more. Some of that might be on a label on the back.
Trudy Cowan, art quilter and teacher takes her quilts themselves further into the realm of storytelling and illustration.
How do the image, fabrics, embellishments and techniques convey and support the tale you wish to tell?
She’ll include the illustrations she created for her bestselling children’s book, The Little Grey Mouse: A Fable in Fabric.

SHE TRAINED AT RYERSON THEATRE SCHOOL AND GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE FASHION PROGRAM.
BRENDA HAS BEEN WORKING IN THEATRE AS A COSTUMER FOR 45 YEARS.
DURING THIS TIME, SHE HAS BEEN AN ASSOCIATE DESIGNER, WARDROBE CO-ORDINATOR AND COSTUME CUTTER AND TAILOR FOR THEATRE COMPANIES ACROSS CANADA.
MOST RECENTLY SHE HAS MADE COSTUMES FOR THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA, THE CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY AND BALLET JORGEN.
BRENDA LIVES IN TOTTENHAM ONTARIO.
